Article - The

Article: The:

The is called definite article. It can be used before singular nouns, plural nouns and uncountable nouns.

The is used :

  • before unique objects group of objects:- the earth; the equator; the universe; the moon
  • before a noun made definite as a result of being mentioned a second time:-  I saw a boy and a girl in the garden.,  The girl was crying and the boy looked confused.
  • before a noun representing only one particular thing ( by reason of locality):-  Mother is in the kitchen. ( the kitchen of speakers house), Please, pass the salt. ( the salt on the table)
  • before a proper noun only when it is qualified by an adjective:- The immortal Shakespeare; the great Caeser.
  • before superlatives and ordinals like first, second etc. used an adjectives:- the first ( chapter ); the best book
  • before a singular noun to represent a class of animals or things:-  The elephant is the largest land animal.
